CULTURAL HERITAGE REVISITED / REMADE
In spring 2024, atelier Halewijn was one of 13 design companies in Blekinge (Sweden), which received a grant from the Blekinge County Culture Department, Blekinge Museum and S-P-O-K.
Historical objects, old crafts and traditional patterns meet contemporary design; in the “Cultural Heritage Design Blekinge” project, 13 local designers and artisans got the opportunity to develop sustainable new interpretations of historical art pieces from the Blekinge Museum Archive. These designs were to be produced in collaboration with local manufacturing companies. The project is part of s-p-o-k.se (Contemporary Production and Consumption) and aims to promote innovative crafts, local production and cross-industry collaborations.
Atelier Halewijn developped 2 prototypes inspired by historical archive pieces;
“Diana & Actaeon”
This wooden tray was developed with CNC cutting and laser engraving. The design was inspired by a three-legged chair with wood engravings, depicting “St. George and the Dragon” and “Diana turns Actaeon into a deer”. These historical depictions inspire an almost spiritual feeling.
Aim was to stay true to the original storytelling and graphic aesthetic, while also keeping a sense of relief in the object which does not limit functionality.
“The Portal to Spirit”
This slate coaster was inspired by historical rock carvings, dating back to the Viking era. Even for this project, laser engraving was used. Despite dating back to eras long gone, the fluid graphic lines feel very contemporary, and the visuals leave a lot of space for story telling and interpretation.
